Why does obi wan let himself die

Zibbobz Zibbobz I was hoping to avoid speculation with a reference to some canon that clarifies whether or not the Falcon 's escape was guaranteed. The conversation between Tarkin and Vader seems to indicate that Luke and the gang would have been allowed to escape no matter what. Good point about Luke being willing to stay behind, though--he stays out there getting shot at until Obi-Wan tells him to flee.

The Falcon has to escape, but Luke doesn't. Leia's mission to deliver the plans doesn't require Luke's survival. I'll go with this. Kenobi getting on the Falcon could have endangered the mission. Luke would have tried to save him, so he let himself be killed.

Show 1 more comment. It was inevitable, at the moment he met Vader Obi-wan was not going win that lightsaber duel. Vader: When I left you, I but the learner; now I am the master. Obi-wan: Only a master of evil, Darth. Vader: Your powers are weak old man.

It was inevitable, at the moment they arrived at the Death Star Vader: I sense something Vader: Obi-Wan is here. The Force is with him. Tarkin: If you're right, he must not be allowed to escape.

Vader: Escape is not his plan. I must face him alone. Obi-wan separated himself from the others because he knew what would happen. It was tactically necessary, at the moment he saw the Millennium Falcon If Obi-wan retreated to the ship with the most powerful Dark Jedi in the galaxy in tow, it would have all but doomed the mission.

Trap, or not Even if Obi-wan somehow knew of the trap for the Rebels, it wouldn't have changed anything. It was best As good a training record as Obi-wan had or not , Yoda was going to be the better teacher.

But as a "powerful" omnipresent Force ghost, Obi-wan could guide him wherever he was. Community Bot 1. Paul Draper Paul Draper 4, 4 4 gold badges 24 24 silver badges 47 47 bronze badges. Obi Wan was a fool. I would have carried for years a nuclear thermo detonator set for 1 second. Registered: Feb 12, He might damage him a bit or possibly even cut off a limb but Obi-Wan was greatly outmatched by Vader.

Then there were troops all around him and even if he did defeat Vader he would be gunned down almost instantly. He sacrificed himself to hold Vader off while Luke escaped because he knew that Luke would be the one to defeat Darth Vader. Only way I could really see Obi Wan surviving was if Han or Chewbacca used the Falcons turrets to shoot down the stormtroopers and have Obi Wan Force lush Vader back fat enough so he could escape.

Building a light saber is a sign of being powerful in the Force, so I assumed some of the Force went into it otherwise you'd just have to be a handy mechanic.

Han only used it for a second and Rey and even Grevious have been trained in the Jedi arts, or in Rey's case, she was strong with the Force. I could be wrong. Last edited: Jul 25, I thought Finn was. But that is a good point. Maybe it's like a battery, and without the Force you can use it for a while. BRE likes this. You must log in or sign up to reply here.

While Obi-Wan may have kept fighting until they had fully escaped, Luke gets distracted from the escape plan as he sees his beloved master fighting Vader. Obi-Wan now probably knows that Luke would join the fight as long as it continues.

So, Ben sacrifices himself to force Luke to get on the Falcon as quickly as possible. We can support this theory by the fact Obi-Wan tells Luke to run after he is already dead. The issue with this theory is that after the Falcon escapes, Darth Vader says he let the Falcon go as he wants it to lead him to the rebel base. So, while this could have been a partial motivation for his death, we hope there is something more. Obi-Wan knows he will be a stronger Jedi after he dies.

He has mastered the Force so well at this point that he is confident he will be able to guide Luke through his voice and appearance even after death.

Yoda tells Obi-Wan during this interaction that he will learn this while hiding on Tatooine. So, we know that Ben has probably mastered this by Episode IV. Qui-Gon realized during the fight how stong Maul was and how the Zabrak was controlling the entire tempo of the fight.

It was not stated that the same had been done to R2-D2, so if he were to remember Obi-Wan which he did , it would make perfect sense. Yoda and Obi-Wan both new it was coming.

Force lightning required a living conduit for the energy to be channeled; thus Darth Vader, despite being an immensely powerful Sith Lord, was never able to properly employ this ability, as any attempt to generate it carried the risk of shorting out his life support systems. So to maintain the religious aspect of the Jedi Order as well as their viewpoint on death, the Jedi would take the kyber crystals from the lightsabers of fallen Jedi and use them to construct an archway inside one of the meditation chambers in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

While Dooku was able to defeat Obi-Wan, nearly killing him, he could not best Anakin.
